I contribute to Zymurgy magazine (Circulation 47,000, readership 70,000), the national journal of the American Homebrewers Association, on a semi-regular basis. Zymurgy‘s readers range from weekend hobbyists who brew beer in their precious spare minutes to full-time professional brewers who continue to maintain close links with the homebrewing community.

Ale on wheels: Building a portable dispensing system. In “Ale on Wheels,” I detail a portable beer and soda dispensing system that I designed and built for my wedding. The article includes photos, a parts list, and a recipe for one of the beers that was served at the reception.

Unreal ale: A Free-Thinker’s Guide to Cask Conditioning. “Unreal Ale” addresses one of my very favorite topics: so-called “real ale” from the United Kingdom. Real ale is naturally carbonated and conditioned in the cask from which it is served, and it’s often dispensed using a swan-necked hand pump called a beer engine. Although I outlined how homebrewers could build their own real ale setups at home using readily available parts, my goal was for this piece to entertain and inform even those who would never bother to build the apparatus. Included is a parts list, photos, and a recipe for my house English-style bitter.

I love you beer, worts and all. I had a great deal of fun writing this one. There’s no technical information here, just a call for readers to always remember why they brew and to honor that each and every time they fire up the kettle.
